2010 - 11 Old Paper Definitions (PPHYS - 311)

1. Root Pressure:- When the absorbed water reaches the root xylem, a pressure develops here which lift the water up to some height in the xylem. This is called the root pressure. It develops when the water content of the soil is high and the rate of transpiration is low. The root pressure develops when active absorption occurs at night.

2. Photophosphorylation:- The synthesis of ATP by cells (in mitochondria & chloroplasts) is called phosphorylation. Photophosphorylation is the synthesis of ATP from ADP in chloroplasts in presence of light. It occurs in 2 ways: Non- cyclic and Cyclic.

4. Water Pottential:- Osmotic movement of water takes place by a driving force which is the difference between free energies of water on two sides of the semi-permeable membrane. Free energy for per mole of non-electrolyte is known as chemical potential. It is denoted by greek letter Psi (Ψ). For water, chemical potential is known as water potential and denoted by Ψw. Free energy of water increases with increase in temperature.

5. Red drop and Emersion Effect (Emersion Enhancement Effect):-

i. Red Drop Effect:- When the plant is given only far-red light, there is a major drop in the rate of photosynthesis. This is called the red drop effect. This is due to PS-II not working.

ii. Emersion Effect (Emersion Enhancement Effect):- When red and Far red light are given to the plant simultaneously, the rate of photosynthesis increases.

Red light = 680nm

Far red light = 700nm

6. Criteria of Essentiality:- For an element be regarded as an essential nutrient, it must satisfy the following criteria -

i. A deficiency of an essential nutrient element makes it impossible for the plant to complete the vegetative or reproductive stage of its life cycle.

ii. The deficiency of an element is very specific to the element in question and deficiency can be corrected /prevented only by supplying that particular element.

iii. The element must directly be involved in the nutrition and metabolism of the plant.

8. Importance of Iron micronutrient in plants:-

- Plants obtain iron in the form of ferric ions (Fe3+).

- It is required in larger amounts in comparison to other micronutrients.

- It is a main constituent of proteins involved in the transfer of electrons like ferredoxin and cytochromes.

- It is reversibly oxidized from Fe2+ to Fe3+ during electron transfer.

- It activates catalase enzyme, and is essential for the formation of chlorophyll.

9. Growth curve:- Typical growth pattern of an annual plant is divided into three phases.

i. Lag period of growth:- During this period the growth rate is quite slow because it is the initial stage of growth.

ii. Log period of growth:- During this period, the growth rate is maximum and reaches the top because at this stage the cell division and physiological processes are quite fast.

iii. Senescence period or steady state period:- During this period the growth is almost complete and become static. Thus, the growth rate becomes zero.

iii. Senescence period or steady state period:- इस अवधि के दौरान वृद्धि लगभग पूर्ण हो जाती है और स्थिर हो जाती है।

10. Photoperiodism:- The flowering in plants in response to the relative lengths of light and dark periods, is called photoperiodism. Garner and Allard introduced the terms photoperiod and photoperiodism and classified plants into the photoperiodic groups we use today.

13. Defficiency symptoms of Magnesium in Plants:- One of the first signs of magnesium deficiency is chlorosis. Another indication of chlorosis is for the leaf margins to turn a red-brown-purple colour. Chlorosis symptoms occurs in the older leaves first. The continued deficiency of magnesium results in leaf necrosis and the dropping of the older leaves will occur. Magnesium is also an activator for various enzymes and a deficiency will lead to a decrease in enzyme activity which will also affect plant growth. Magnesium stabilises the ribosome structures and the breakdown of these structures leads to premature ageing of the plant.
