Seed dormancy and Seed germination

Seed dormancy and Seed germination
Seed Dormancy (बीज प्रसुप्ति):-
Introduction (परिचय):-
> Lang (1987) gave most accepted terminology of dormancy. According to this definition, dormancy is temporary suspension of growth of an organ/tissue having meristematic activity.
> A condition in which seeds fail to germinate, even under favourable environmental conditions for germination.

Types of seed dormancy
1. Exogenous dormancy (बहिर्जात प्रसुप्ति):- This type of dormancy is imposed by external factors outside the embryo. It is further of three types:-
i. Physical dormancy or seed coat dormancy (भौतिक प्रसुप्ति या बीज चोल प्रसुप्ति)):- In the case of physical dormancy the seed coat or seed covering may become hard, fibrous or mucilaginous (adhesives gum) during dehydration and ripening as a result they become impermeable to water and gases, which prevents the physiological processes initiating germination. Drupes fruits exhibit this type of dormancy commonly, i.e., olive, peach, plum, apricot, cherry etc. (hardened endocarp), walnut and pecan nut (surrounding shell).
ii. Mechanical dormancy (यांत्रिक प्रसुप्ति):- Some fruits have covered seeds that prevent radical growth, resulting in dormancy. During germination, some seed coverings, such as walnut shells, stone fruit pits, and olive stones, are too strong to allow dormant embryos to expand.
iii. Chemical dormancy (रासायनिक प्रसुप्ति):- Some seeds of certain fruits are protected from germination by chemicals that accumulate in fruit and seed tissue during development and persist after harvest. It mainly occurs in fleshy fruits or fruits with seeds that remain in their juice, such as citrus, stone fruits, pears, and grapes. There are several phenols, coumarins, and abscisic acids associated with inhibition. Consequently, seeds are inhibited from germinating.

2. Endogenous dormancy (अंतर्जात प्रसुप्ति):- A dormancy of this nature is induced by a rudimentary or undeveloped embryo at the time of maturation or ripening. There are several types of dormancy:
a. Morphological dormancy or rudimentary and linear embryo (आकारिकीय प्रसुप्ति या अल्पविकसित और रैखिक भ्रूण):- Dormancy occurs in some seeds in which the embryo is not fully developed at the time of seed dissemination. Such seeds do not germinate, if planted immediately after harvesting. Plants with rudimentary embryos produce seeds with a pro-embryo embedded in a massive endosperm at the time of fruit maturation. Enlargement of the embryo occurs after the seeds have imbibed water but, before germination begins. Formation of rudimentary embryo is common in various plant families such as Ranunculaceae (Ranunculus), Papavaraceae (poppy).
b. Physiological dormancy (कार्यिकीय प्रसुप्ति):-
i. Non-deep physiological dormancy (गैर-गहरी कार्यिकीय प्रसुप्ति):- In dry storage, seeds must lose dormancy within a set period of time after ripening. The onset of this type of dormancy is often temporary, and it disappears after dry storage. Fruits such as apple, pear, cherry, peach, plum, and apricot have physiological dormancy, which may last from one to six months and disappear with dry storage.
ii. Photo dormancy (प्रकाश प्रसुप्ति):- A seed that needs either light or darkness to germinate is called a photodormant seed. Several plants contain phytochrome pigments that are photochemically reactive. The red form of phytochrome (Pfr) is formed as soon as imbibed seeds are exposed to light (660-760nm), thereby initiating the germination process. In contrast, far-red light (760-800 nm) causes Pfr to change to Pf, which inhibits germination.
iii. Thermo dormancy (ताप प्रसुप्ति):- Some seeds require a specific temperature to germinate, otherwise they remain dormant. Such seeds are called thermo dormant seeds. Physiological dormancy can be classified into three groups:
i) Intermediate physiological dormancy (मध्यवर्ती कार्यिकीय प्रसुप्ति):- Certain species require a minimum of 1-3 months of moist chilling in an aerated and imbibed state. For example, the seed dormancy of most temperate fruit seeds can be overcome by moist chilling. Due to this requirement, horticultural stratification has become a world-famous practice. During the process involves placing moist sand between layers of seeds in boxes, which are then exposed to temperatures of 2 to 7°C for up to 3-6 months to overcome dormancy.
ii) Deep physiological dormancy (गहरी कार्यिकीय प्रसुप्ति):- Seeds that usually require a long time (>8 weeks) of moist chilling stratification to remove dormancy, as in peaches.
iii) Epicotyl dormancy (एपिकोटाइल प्रसुप्ति):- It refers to seeds with a separate dormancy condition for the epicotyl and radical hypocotyl. It is known as epicotyl dormancy.
c. Double dormancy (दोहरी प्रसुप्ति):- Seeds of some species are dormant because of hard seed coats and dormant embryos. In nature, such seeds take two years to break dormancy. During the first spring, microorganisms make the seeds weak and brittle so that there is an embryo dormancy that is broken by a cold winter next year. The occurrence of more than one type of dormancy is known as double dormancy.
d. Secondary dormancy (द्वितीयक प्रसुप्ति):- This occurs as a result of germination conditions. An imbibed seed is not allowed to germinate if the surrounding conditions are not favourable. These conditions can include high temperatures, low light, and prolonged darkness, as well as stress related to water. It can be divided into three types:
i. Thermo dormancy (ताप प्रसुप्ति):- Dormancy resulting from high temperatures.
ii. Photo dormancy (प्रकाश प्रसुप्ति):- Seeds exposed to excess light for a long period of time.
iii. Skotodormancy (अंधकार प्रसुप्ति):- Germination requires light when they are soaked in darkness for an extended period of time.

Methods to break dormancy (प्रसुप्ति को तोड़ने की विधियाँ):- The dormancy of fruit seeds can be broken using different methods.
i. Scarification (स्केरिफिकेशन):- This is a method for making seed coverings permeable to gases and water by scratching, breaking, removing or mechanically altering them. Scarification may be accomplished through mechanical, chemical, hot water, and warm moist methods.
ii. Stratification (स्तरीकरण):- It is the process of rehydrating dormant seed in which a period of chilling is applied to the imbibed seeds to ripen the embryo in alternate layers of sand or soil for a period of time. It is also known as moist chilling. Many tropical and subtropical species (like palms) require the embryo to be subjected to a warm stratification period prior to germination, whereas seeds with hard endocarps, such as the stone fruit including cherry, plum, apricot and peaches show increased germination if planted early in the summer.
iii. Leaching of inhibitors (अवरोधकों का निक्षालन):- It is well known that phenolic compounds and some inhibitors are present in seed coverings of several species, causing inhibition of the germination process. In this regard, soaking seeds 12-24 hours in water or placing them in water for few hours helps in leaching off inhibitors and phenolic compounds, which aid in easy seed germination.
iv. Pre-chilling (पूर्व-शीतलन):- In some plants, the dormancy of seeds can be overcome through pre-chilling. The soaked or imbibed seeds are kept at a temperature of 5-10º C for 5-7 days before sowing in this treatment. Afterwards, seeds can be immediately sown in the field.
v. Pre-drying (पूर्व शुष्कन):- This technique also helps overcome seeds dormancy. For this treatment, the dry seeds are heated to 37-40°C for 5-7 days before sowing. After this, seed can be sown in the field.
vi. Seed priming (बीज प्राइमिंग):- Seed priming refers to the procedure of overcoming dormancy in newly harvested fruits. Among the most common seed priming procedures are osmo-conditioning, infusion, and fluid drilling.
- In osmo-conditioning, the seeds are placed in shallow layer in a container having 20-30 per cent solution of poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG). The seeds are then incubated at 15-20°C for 7-21 days, depending on the seed size and species.
- During infusion, hormones, fungicides, or insecticides, as well as antidotes, are infused directly into dormant seeds by organic formulations. This process involves soaking seeds for 1-4 hours in acetone or dichloromethane solution containing chemicals.
- During fluid drilling, the seeds are suspended in a gel before they are sown. Today, there are many types of gels available in the market, but sodium alginate, guar gum, and synthetic clay are the most common materials used in fluid drilling.

Significance of seed dormancy
i. In plant ecology and agriculture, dormancy allows seeds to survive periods when seedling establishment would be unfavourable.
ii. A condition such as this can only be met when conditions favour survival of seedlings, as is the case with fruit plants in temperate regions. Such conditions are helpful for seed preservation in seed bank.
iii. Additionally, dormancy may synchronize the germination of seedlings to a particular time of year.
iv. Dormancy conditions can facilitate seed dispersal by facilitating dormancy. For example, modification of seed covering through digestive tract of a bird or other animals.

Seed Germination (बीज अंकुरण):-
Introduction (परिचय):-
> The process whereby the embryo resumes growth and the radicle and plumule break through the seed coat is known as seed germination.
> It is defined as the process of water absorption by a quiescent dry seed that leads to the extension of an embryonic axis.
> A seed’s germination process is triphasic, i.e., it comprises three steps.
i. Phase - I (चरण - I):- Rapid initial uptake or imbibition.
ii. Phase - II (चरण - II):- Plateau phase or lag phase.
iii. Phase - III (चरण - III):- Further increase of water uptake, however, only when germination occurs, which leads to radicle emergence.

Types of seeds (बीजों के प्रकार):- Based on the longevity of storage of fruit seeds can be classified into three types:
i. Orthodox seed (ओर्थोडॉक्स बीज):- This type of seed is dried down to around 5-10 % moisture content and can survive at a low or sub-freezing temperature. These seeds remain viable in a dry state for a predictable period of time. During ex-situ conservation, these seeds survive drying and freezing. Notable fruit crops include guava, sapota, banana, apple, cherry etc.
ii. Recalcitrant seeds (रीकैल्सीट्रेंट बीज):- Seeds that cannot be dried below high relative moisture content (30-50 %) and cannot be stored for an extended period of time. Their vitality period is short and they are sensitive to  desiccation. Recalcitrant seeds are those that cannot be dried and frozen during ex-situ storage. E.g., jamun, litchi, mango, mangosteen, durian, citrus, avocado, rambutan etc.
iii. Intermediate seeds (मध्यवर्ती बीज):- Intermediate seeds have the same drying tolerance as orthodox seeds, however they are more sensitive to low temperatures than recalcitrant seeds. E.g., papaya, macadamia nut. Papaya is commercially propagated by seeds.

Types of seed germination
i. Epigeal germination (ऊपरिभूमिक अंकुरण):- It is the process by which the cotyledons emerge from the soil and turn green. In dicots, they are pushed up by rapid growth of the hypocotyl before the growth of the epicotyl. In this case straightening of hypocotyl raises the cotyledons and shoot apex towards light. E.g., bean, tamarind etc.
ii. Hypogeal germination (अधोभूमिक अंकुरण):- In this germination type, the cotyledons remain underground while hypocotyl growth is restricted. Epicotyl can grow by raising the first leaves from the soil. E.g., custard apple, pea, gram, mango etc.
iii. Viviparous germination (जरायुज अंकुरण):- This is a special type of germination which usually occurs in mangroves. During this type of germination, the seed is still attached to the parent plant as it germinates. The embryo emerges from the fruit with an immense radicle pointing downwards, and because of its increased weight, the seedling separates from the parent plant and settles in muddy soil.

Factors affecting seed germination (बीज अंकुरण को प्रभावित करने वाले कारक):-
i. Moisture (नमी):- Seeds require a certain amount of moisture to fully saturate and soften. It is required for seed germination. The absorbed water hydrates the cell walls and starch grains, fills the embryo and all empty spaces in the seed, and saturates all the living cells. The seed volume increases with this uptake of water.
ii. Temperature (तापमान):- Temperature has an effect on germination by its influence on the rate of water intake and the speed of metabolic processes within seed. Maximum and minimum temperatures are the highest and lowest respectively, at which germination will take place and these provides the extreme between which germination will occur for given plants.
iii. Light (प्रकाश):- Seeds can be classified into different types upon the effect of light on germination but seeds which are indifferent to light and apparently germinate equally well in light or darkness is true for most fruit crops like pecans, peach, blackberry etc.
iv. Oxygen (ऑक्सीज़न):- The embryo requires oxygen for respiration as well as for initiation of growth. In compact, poorly prepared or excessive wet seed beds germination may be retarded or prevented by lack of oxygen.
