Entrepreneur: Concept and Characteristics
Entrepreneur: Concept and Characteristics:-
Concept of an Entrepreneur
> An entrepreneur is an individual who creates and manages a business venture, taking on most of the risks and enjoying most of the rewards. He is a person who starts an enterprise. He is the ultimate owner of the business entrepreneurship.
> Entrepreneurs innovate by identifying gaps in the market and offering new products or services. They play a critical role in driving economic growth and job creation. The term "entrepreneur" derives from the French word "entreprendre", meaning "to undertake."
> In India, entrepreneurship has historically been part of the culture, especially in regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, where trading communities flourished. However, the modern concept of entrepreneurship has evolved in the context of start-ups, innovation-driven businesses, and social enterprises.
> The word "entrepreneur" was first used in a formal, economic context by Richard Cantillon, an Irish-French economist, in his 1755 work "Essay on the Nature of Trade in General". He defined an entrepreneur as someone who buys resources at certain prices to resell them at uncertain prices, thus bearing the risk of the enterprise.
