Definition of Essential Nutrients (आवश्यक पोषक तत्वों की परिभाषा):- Essential nutrients are chemical elements required by plants to complete their life cycle, reproduce, and grow properly. These nutrients must be absorbed by plants from their environment (primarily soil and atmosphere) in adequate amounts to sustain metabolic processes, ensure structural integrity, and facilitate growth and reproduction.

Criteria of Essentiality (अनिवार्यता का मानदंड):- Nutrition may be defined as the supply and absorption of chemical compounds required for plant life, growth, and metabolism. It is the process of absorption and utilization of essential elements for plant growth and reproduction. Arnon (1954) has defined the following criteria/objectives for the essentiality of any nutrient:
(पोषण को पौधों के जीवन, वृद्धि और उपापचय के लिए आवश्यक रासायनिक यौगिकों की आपूर्ति और अवशोषण के रूप में परिभाषित किया जा सकता है। यह पौधों की वृद्धि और जनन के लिए आवश्यक तत्वों के अवशोषण और उपयोग की प्रक्रिया है। आर्नोन (1954) ने किसी भी पोषक तत्व की अनिवार्यता के लिए निम्नलिखित मानदंड/उद्देश्यों को परिभाषित किया है:)
i. The plant cannot grow or complete its life cycle in the absence of the element.
(तत्व की अनुपस्थिति में पौधा वृद्धि नहीं कर सकता या अपना जीवन चक्र पूरा नहीं कर सकता।)
ii. The element is particular and cannot be replaced by another element.
(तत्व विशिष्ट होता है और उसे किसी अन्य तत्व द्वारा प्रतिस्थापित नहीं किया जा सकता है।)
iii. The element plays a direct role in plant metabolism.
(यह तत्व पौधों के उपापचय में प्रत्यक्ष भूमिका निभाता है।)
Thus, an essential plant nutrient may be defined as “an element so crucial for a specific metabolic activity that in its absence the plants cannot continue to grow or complete their life cycle, and it cannot be substituted by another element.
