Soil reaction and buffering capacity

Soil reaction and buffering capacity
Soil reaction (मृदा अभिक्रिया):- Clay particles are the site of ionic activity. This helps the soil to retain the nutrients and supply the same to the plants or microorganisms for their use. In the fertility management of the soil, knowledge of soil reaction is considered very essential.

Soil pH (मृदा pH):-
> This is a measure of the soil acidity or alkalinity and is sometimes called the soil “water” pH. This is because it is a measure of the pH of the soil solution, which is considered the active pH that affects plant growth.
> Soil pH is the foundation of essentially all soil chemistry and nutrient reaction and should be the first consideration when evaluating a soil test.
> The total range of the soil pH scale is from 0-14. Values below the mid-point (pH 7.0) are acidic and those above pH 7.0 are alkaline. A soil pH of 7.0 is considered to be neutral.
> Most plants perform best in a soil that is slightly acid to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Some plants like blueberries require the soil to be more acid (pH 4.5-5.5), and other, like alfalfa will tolerate a slightly alkaline soil (pH 7.0-7.5).
> The soil pH scale is logarithmic; meaning that each whole number is a factor of 10 larger or smaller than the ones next to it.
𝒑𝑯 = −𝒍𝒐𝒈[𝑯+]
[H+] = The concentration of H+ ions
> For example if a soil has a pH of 7.0 and this pH is lowered to 6.0, the acid content of that soil is increased 10-fold. If the pH is lowered further to 5.0, the acid content becomes 100 times greater than at 7.0.
> The logarithmic nature of the pH scale means that small changes in a soil pH can have large effects on nutrient availability and plant growth.

Soil acidity (मृदा अम्लीयता):-
> Soils are acidic for one or more of the following reasons:
i. Heavy rain.
ii. Origin of soil from acid parent material.
iii. Use of acidic fertilizers.
iv. Microbial action.
> Acid soils in Asia and elsewhere are located in the areas of high rainfall and pH ranges from 4.9-6.6. The acidic soils in India are located in Kerala, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, West Bengal and Orissa.
> Acidity may have direct influence (toxic effect of H+ ions on root tissues, permeability of plant membranes for ions and disturbance of balance in acid and basic constituents) through the roots. The soil acidity also exerts harmful effect on plants by affecting the enzymatic changes.
> Acidity may also affect plants indirectly as follows:
i. Reduced availability of various nutrients, e.g. phosphate, copper and zinc.
ii. Increased availability of elements viz. aluminum, manganese and iron in toxic amount.
iii. Retarding of microbial activity.
iv. Increased the virulence of plant disease.
v. Leaching of nutrients viz. calcium and potassium.
> Rice, oat, linseed can tolerate a fairly acid reaction (pH 5.0) while barley, sugarbeet and lucerne can tolerate a fairly alkaline reaction (pH 9.0).
> Soil acidity is caused by ionisable hydrogen ions or protons.
> The hydrogen ions are due to the permanent charge on mineral surfaces.
> Reclamation includes liming with agricultural lime or dolomite to raise pH levels.

Soil alkalinity (मृदा क्षारीयता):-
> Soil reaction is alkaline when the pH of a soil is more than 7. Soil alkalinity may be due to high base saturation particularly with sodium and to the presence of free carbonates of calcium and sodium.
> Saline and alkali soils most commonly occur under arid and semi-arid condition. This is due to the presence of an excess of sodium salts. They are also called problematic salt affected soils. From the management point of view these are classified as:
i. Saline soils (लवणीय मृदाएँ):- Soils are classified as saline if the extract from the soil paste records the EC > 4 at 25°C, pH < 8.5 and ESP < 15.
> Reclamation includes leaching with good quality water, improved drainage, and salt-tolerant crops.
ii. Alkali soils (क्षारीय मृदाएँ):- Soils are classified as alkali if the extract from the soil paste records the EC < 4 at 25°C, pH > 10 and ESP > 15. Alkali soils (also called sodic soils) are characterized by a high proportion of sodium ions (Na⁺) adsorbed on the soil colloids, especially exchangeable sodium.
> Reclamation includes application of gypsum (CaSO4) to replace sodium with calcium, and addition of organic matter.
iii. Saline Alkali soils (लवणीय क्षारीय मृदाएँ):- Saline alkali soils are ill defined soils. They behave between the two. Their reclamation process depends on the predominance of the problem. Conventionally saline alkali soils are characterised as the soils recording the EC about 4 mmhoslcm, pH between 8.5 - 10, and ESP about 15.

> Buffering refers to resistance to a change in pH. A buffer solution is one which contains reserve acidity and alkalinity and does not change pH with small addition of acids a alkalies.
> Soils also exhibit buffering action. In order to produce a certain change of pH it is usually necessary to add much more acid a alkali that the amount of H+ or OH- in the soil suspension would lead to expected result. Buffering action (resistance to change in pH) is due to the influence of weak acids and their salts. The colloidal complex with associated cations acts as a strong buffering agent. Organic acids are continuously being formed as a result of microbial activity. These are weak acids which act as excellent buffering agents.
> H+ ions are released slowly from the exchange complex and provide reserve (potential) acidity. As soon as H+ of soil solution (active acidity) is neutralisedby alkaline substances and more H+ ions are released, thus effecting little change in pH.
> The significance of soil buffering is felt in the stabilisation of soil pH and estimating the amount of amendments necessary to affect a certain change in soil reaction.

Effect of pH on nutrient availability
Introduction (परिचय):- pH is: (pH है:)
> Measure of acidity or basicity.
> Defined as negative logarithm of activity of H+ ion in a solution.
> pH = -log [H+].
> pH ranges between 1-14.
> The term "pH" was first described by Danish biochemist Søren Peter Lauritz Sørensen in 1909.
> pH is “power of hydrogen” where “p” is short for the German word for power, potenz and “H” is the element symbol for hydrogen.
> pH can affect nutrient availability by (pH पोषक तत्वों की उपलब्धता को प्रभावित कर सकता है):-
i. Formation of low solubility compounds.
ii. Greater retention by soil colloids (clays and organic matter).
iii. Conversion of soluble forms to ions that plants cannot absorb.
iv. Can inhibit or stimulate microbial activity.
- It is upper and biochemically weathered portion of the earth.
- It composed of weathered rock material, organic matter, water and air.
- It supports plant life.
> Plant Nutrients (पादप पोषक):- The elements which are required for proper growth, development and reproduction of plants.
Nutrient availability in relation to soil pH
> There are two types of nutrients:
i. Macronutrients (वृहद पोषक):- These are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S).
ii. Micronutrients (सूक्ष्म पोषक):- These are iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), and boron (B).
Grey Speck of oats (जई का स्लेटी बाली):- It is a physiological disorder caused by a deficiency of Manganese (Mn). This condition typically occurs in plants grown in soils where manganese availability is low, often due to high soil pH or high organic matter content.
> Both macronutrient and micronutrient availability are affected by soil pH.
> In slightly to moderately alkaline soils, molybdenum and macronutrient (except for phosphorus) availability is increased, but P, Fe, Mn, Zn Cu, and Co levels are reduced and may adversely affect plant growth.
> In acidic soils, micronutrient availability (except for Mo and B) is increased.
Low pH (कम pH):- Soil acidity affects plant growth in several ways:
- The concentration of soluble metals, especially aluminum and manganese may be toxic.
- Calcium may be deficient.
- When the soil pH is lower, more H+ ions are available to “exchange” base cations, thereby removing them from exchange sites and releasing them to the soil solution (soil water).
- Lower pH increases the solubility of Al, Mn, and Fe, which are toxic to plants in excess. A critical effect of excess soluble Al is the slowing or stopping of root growth.
- Low pH reduces the availability of the macro- and secondary nutrients.
- Symbiotic N fixation in legume crops is greatly impaired.
- The symbiotic relationship requires a narrower range of soil reaction than does the growth of plants not relying on N fixation.
- Populations and the activity of the organisms responsible to transform N, S, and P to plant-available forms may be reduced.
- The availability of mineral elements to plants may be affected.
High pH (उच्च pH):-
- When the soil pH is high (i.e., more basic, low concentration of H+), more base cations will be on the particle exchange sites.
- As a result, exchanged nutrients are either taken up by the plant or lost through leaching or erosion.
- Microbial activity may also be reduced or changed.

Important Nutrient Elements in relation to pH (pH
1. Nitrogen (नाइट्रोजन) (N):-
> Key soil nutrients.
> Plant available forms are ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (N03-) form.
> At neutral pH, the microbial conversion of NH4+ to nitrate (nitrification) is rapid, and crops generally take up nitrate.
> In acid soils (pH < 6), nitrification is slow, and plants with the ability to take up NH4+ may have an advantage.
> Soil pH is also an important factor in the N nutrition of legumes. The survival and activity of Rhizobium declines as soil acidity increases.
2. Phosphorus (फोस्फोरस) (P):-
> Form and availability is highly pH dependent.
> The limited solubility of P relates to its tendency to form a wide range of stable minerals in soil. Under alkaline soil conditions, P fertilizers generally form more stable (less soluble) minerals through reactions with calcium (Ca).
> The fate of added P in acidic soils is somewhat different as precipitation reactions occur with aluminum (A1) and iron (Fe). The tie-up of P in A1-P and Fe-P minerals under acidic conditions tends to be more permanent than in Ca-P minerals.
> In order for P to be available for plants, soil pH needs to be in the range 6.0 and 7.5. If pH is lower than 6, P starts forming insoluble compounds with iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) and if pH is higher than 7.5 P starts forming insoluble compounds with calcium (Ca).
> Phosphorus movement in the soil to plant roots takes place primarily by diffusion. Because phosphorus is relatively immobile and exists in very low concentrations in the soil solution, it moves from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration (the root surface) via diffusion. This process accounts for roughly 90–97% of phosphorus transport to plant roots.
3. Potassium (पोटेशियम) (K):- The fixation of potassium (K) between clay layers tends to be lower under acid conditions. This situation is thought to be due to the presence of soluble aluminum that occupies the binding sites.
4. Sulfur (सल्फर) (S):- Sulfate (SO4 2-) sulfur, the plant available form of S, is little affected by soil pH.
5. Boron (बोरॉन) (B):- Boron availability to plants decreases with increasing soil pH, especially above pH 6.5. However, strongly acid soils (pH less than 5.0) also tend to be low in available B.
6. Iron (आयरन) (Fe):-
> Iron (Fe) is one essential plant nutrient whose solubility is affected by pH that is why it is added in a chelated form.
> At pH values over 7, less than 50% of the Fe is available to plants.
> At pH 8.0, no Fe is left in solution due to iron hydroxide precipitation {Fe(OH)3 - which eventually converts to rust}.
> As long as the pH is kept below 6.5, over 90% of the Fe is available to plants.
> Due to calcium phosphate precipitation (Ca3(PO4)2) the availability of Ca and P decreases at pH values above 6.0. All other nutrients stay in solution and do not precipitate over a wide pH range. Precipitation reduces Fe, Ca and P availability at pH 6.0 and over.
