Soil taxonomy, Keys to soil orders, Soils of India
Soil taxonomy, Keys to soil orders (मृदा वर्गिकी, मृदा गणों की कुंजी):- There are various climatic regions, relief features, land forms and vegetation types all over India. These have resulted in the development of different types of soils in India. A number of classifications are adopted in order to study the Indian soils. These are mentioned in the following:
A. Ancient Classification (प्राचीन वर्गीकरण):- In ancient times, soils used to be classified into two main groups:
1. Urvara (उर्वरा):- Fertile soil.
2. Usara (उसरा):- Sterile soil.
B. Classification based upon Intrinsic Characteristics and External Features (आंतरिक विशेषताओं और बाहरी विशेषताओं के आधार पर वर्गीकरण):- Later on, in the 16th century A.D., soils were classified on the basis of their intrinsic characteristics and external features, such as colour, texture, the slope of land, soil’s moisture content, etc. Based on colour, soils were classified into red, yellow, black, etc. On the basis of texture, main soil types were identified as sandy, clay, silt, loam, etc.
Measurement of soil colour (मृदा रंग का मापन):- Soil colour is measured using Munsell colour chart and expressed in terms of Hue, Value and Chroma. These three parameters are called as soil colour notations or Munsell colour notations.
- Hue denotes the Dominant spectral colour.
- Value denotes the Intensity of colour.
- Chroma denotes the Purity of colour.
These three parameters are expressed in the following format:
Hence, 10YR 5/4 means, the Hue is 10YR, 5 is the Value and 4 is the chroma.
C. Classification according to ICAR (ICAR के अनुसार वर्गीकरण):- The National Bureau of Soil Survey and the Land Use Planning – an Institute under the control of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) did a lot of studies and researches on Indian soils. The ICAR has classified the Indian soils based on their nature and characteristics as per the Soil Taxonomy of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In soil taxonomy, there are 12 soil orders:
1. Entisol (एंटिसोल):- This is the immature soil that lacks the vertical development of its horizons. This type of soil is often associated with recently deposited sediments from wind, water, or ice erosion. Over the time, this soil develops into another soil type.
2. Inceptisol (इन्सेप्टीसॉल):- This is considerably young soil that is more developed than Entisol.
3. Vertisol (वर्टिसोल):- Vertisol is a type of heavy clay soil that shows significant expansion and contraction due to the presence or absence of moisture. This type of soil is common in areas having shale parent material and heavy precipitation.
4. Aridisol (एरिडिसोल):- Aridisol is those type of soil which develops in very dry climatic conditions.
5. Ultisol (अल्टिसोल):- It is associated with humid temperate in tropical climates. Warm temperatures and the abundant variability of moisture enhance the weathering process and increase the rate of leaching in these soils and thus develops Ultisol soil.
6. Mollisol (मोल्लीसोल):- Mollisol is common to grassland environments.
7. Alfisols (अल्फिसोल्स):- Moderately leached soils with clay accumulation; fertile.
8. Andisols (एंडिसोल्स):- Volcanic soils; rich in organic matter.
9. Gelisols (जेलिसोल्स):- Soils with permafrost; cold regions.
10. Histosols (हिस्टोसोल्स):- Organic soils; peat or muck soils.
11. Oxisols (ऑक्सीसोल्स):- Highly weathered tropical soils; rich in iron and aluminum oxides.
12. Spodosols (स्पोडोसोल्स):- Acidic soils with accumulation of organic matter and aluminum/iron in B horizon.

Soils of India (भारत की मृदाएँ):- On the basis of genesis, colour, composition and location, the Indian soils are classified into following categories:
1. Alluvial soil (जलोढ़ मृदा):- Alluvial soil is mostly available soil in India. Approximately 43% of Indian soils is alluvial type. It covers an area of nearly 143 sq.km. Alluvial soil dominates the northern plains and river valleys, but in peninsular-India, they are mainly located in deltas and estuaries. For instance, Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputhra plain, Narmada-Tapi plain etc. can be mentioned. It is some kind of depositional soil – transported and deposited by rivers, streams etc. Alluvial soil is highly fertile as it contains humus, lime and lots of organic matters; it is especially rich in Potash. This Alluvial soil can further be classified into two types – the new alluvium is termed as 'Khadar' whereas the old alluvium is termed as 'Bhangar'. Colour of this soil is light gray to ash grey, and texture varies between sandy to silty loam or clay. Wheat, rice, maize, sugarcane, pulses, oilseed etc are mainly cultivated in this soil.
2. Red soil (लाल मृदा):- Red soil is seen mostly in low rainfall area. It is also known as Omnibus group. This type of soil is characterised with the absence of lime and impure calcium carbonate. Red soil is deficient in lime, phosphate, manganese, nitrogen, humus and potash. It is red in colour because of the presence of Ferric Oxide. The lower layer of this soil is reddish yellow or yellow. Red soil consists of sandy to clay and loamy texture. Wheat, cotton, pulses, tobacco, oilseeds, potato etc. are cultivated in red soil.
3. Black soil / Regur soil (काली मृदा / रेगुर मृदा):- Black soil is also known as "Regur", which means cotton – since this soil is best for the cultivation of cotton. Most of the Deccan plateau area is covered with Black soil. It comprises high water retaining capacity. This soil swells and becomes sticky when it is wet, and shrinks when dried up. Self-ploughing is a unique characteristic of Regur soil as it develops wide cracks when dried. It is rich in iron, lime, calcium, potassium, aluminum and magnesium. But deficient in Nitrogen, Phosphorous and organic matters. Regur soil is deep black to light black in colour with a clayey texture.
4. Arid / Desert soil (शुष्क / रेगिस्तानी मृदा):- Desert soil is deposited mostly by wind activities. It is seen under Arid and Semi-Arid conditions. It consists of high salt content. It lacks of moisture and humus. Kankar or Impure Calcium carbonate content is high in Desert or Arid soil which restricts the infiltration of water. Nitrogen is insufficient and Phosphate is normal in this soil. It posses sandy texture and red to brown colour.
5. Laterite soil (लैटेराइट मृदा):- The name of Laterite soil is deprived from the Latin word ‘Later’ which means Brick. It becomes so soft when wet and so hard when dried up. Laterite soil is found in the areas with high temperature and high rainfall, which develops as a result of high leaching in those areas. Lime and silica leach away from the soil. Organic matters of the soil are removed fast by the bacteria as it is high temperature and humus is taken quickly by the trees and other plants. Thus, humus content remains low in this soil. However, it is rich in iron and aluminum, but deficient in Nitrogen, Potash, Potassium, Lime, Humus. Colour of this soil is Red due to the presence of iron oxide. Rice, Ragi, Sugarcane and Cashew nuts are cultivated widely in Laterite soil.
6. Peaty / Marshy soil (पीटयुक्त / दलदली मृदा):- Peaty or Marshy soil is seen in the areas of heavy rainfall and high humidity. Growth of vegetation is very less in this type of soil. A large quantity of dead organic matter/humus is always present in this soil which makes it alkaline. It is some sort of heavy soil with black colour.
7. Forest soil (वन मृदा):- It is so obvious that Forest soil is found in the regions of high rainfall. Humus content is less and thus the soil is acidic.
8. Mountain soil (पहाड़ी मृदा):- Mountain soil is found in the mountain regions of the country. This is an immature soil with low humus content and it is acidic in nature.
