Soil temperature

Soil temperature (मृदा तापमान):-
Soil Temperature (मृदा तापमान):- Soil temperature is an important plant growth factor like air, water and nutrients. Soil temperature affects plant growth directly and also indirectly by influencing moisture, aeration, structure, microbial and enzyme activities, rate of organic matter decomposition, nutrient availability and other soil chemical reactions. Specific crops are adapted to specific soil temperatures. Apple grows well when the soil temperature is about 18°C, maize 25°C, potato 16 to 21°C, and so on.

Sources of soil heat (मृदा ऊष्मा के स्रोत):- There are various sources of soil heat namely, solar radiation, biochemical reactions, conduction, precipitation, exposure and vegetation etc.
1. Solar radiation (सौर विकिरण):- Radiant energy from the sun is the power source that determines the thermal regime of the soil and the growth of plants. Agriculture is the exploitation of solar energy in the presence of an adequate water supply and sufficient plant nutrients to maintain plant growth. Much of the radiation from the sun is dissipated and distributed by components of the earth’s atmosphere as it passes downward toward the earth. The heat absorbed by the surface of the earth from the solar radiation is affected by several parameters like latitude, distribution of land and water, slope of the land etc.
2. Bio-chemical reactions (जैव-रासायनिक अभिक्रियाएँ):- In the soil atmosphere a variety of chemical reactions are going on and during such reactions liberation of large amount of heat in the soil environment results. Besides decomposition of organic matter and other crop residues in the soil and other microbial processes liberate large amounts of heat in the soil and thus contributes soil heat.
3. Conduction (चालन):- The inner atmosphere of the earth is very hot, the conduction of the heat to the soil environment is very slow. Generally, during night, the upper most surface soil becomes cooler than sub-surface soil. Thus heat flows from the regions of sub-soil to the region of surface soil (cooler soil layer).
Fourier's Law of Heat Conduction (फोरियर का ऊष्मा चालन नियम):- It states that the rate of heat transfer through a material is directly proportional to the negative gradient of temperature and the area through which heat flows.
where (जहाँ):
Q = Heat transfer rate
k = Thermal conductivity
A = Area
dT/dx = Temperature gradient

4. Precipitation (वर्षा):- During the winter season precipitation increases soil heat because of its (precipitation) higher specific heat.
5. Exposure (उजागर):- Exposure is of little importance in the tropics because of the high elevation of the sun. It is of significance in the middle latitude where the elevation is lower. The greater the percentage of diffuse sky radiation in the global radiation, the smaller is the difference in the incoming solar energy per unit area for slopes of different exposures.
6. Vegetation (वनस्पति):- Vegetation plays a significant role of soil heat because of the insulating properties of plant cover. Bare soil is unprotected from the direct rays of the sun and becomes highly warm during the hottest part of the day.

Amount and flow of heat in soil
1. Thermal (Heat) capacity of soil (मृदा की तापीय क्षमता):- The amount of energy required to raise the temperature by 1°C is called heat capacity. When it is expressed per unit mass (Calories per gram), then it is called as specific heat. The specific heat of water is 1.00 cal g-1 where the specific heat of a dry soil is 0.2 cal g-1. Increasing water content in soil increases the specific heat of the soil and hence a dry soil heats up quickly than a moist soil.
2. Heat of vaporization (वाष्पीकरण की ऊष्मा):- The evaporation of water from soil requires a large amount of energy, 540 kilocalories kg-1 soil. Soil water utilizes the energy from solar radiation to evaporate and thereby rendering it unavailable for heating up of soil. Also the thermal energy from soil is utilized for the evaporation of water, thereby reducing the soil temperature. This is the reason that surface soil temperatures will be sometimes 1 to 6°C lower than the sub-surface soil temperature. That is why the specific heat of a wet soil is higher than dry soil.
3. Thermal conductivity and diffusivity (तापीय चालकता और विसरणशीलता):- This refers to the movement of heat in soils. In soil, heat is transmitted through conduction. Heat passes from soil to water about 150 times faster than soil to air. So the movement of heat will be more in wet soil than in dry soil where the pores will be occupied with air. Thermal conductivity of soil forming materials is 0.005 units, and that of air is 0.00005 units, water 0.001 units. A dry and loosely packed soil will conduct heat slower than a compact soil and wet soil.
4. Biological activity (जैविक गतिविधि):- Respiration by soil animals, microbes and plant roots evolve heat. More the biological activity more will be the soil temperature.
5. Radiation from soil (मृदा से विकिरण):- Radiation from high temperature bodies (Sun) is in short waves (0.3 to 2.2μ) and that from low temperature bodies (soil) is in long waves (6.8 to 100μ) Longer wavelengths have little ability to penetrate water vapour, air and glass and hence soil remains warm during night hours, cloudy days and in glass houses.
6. Soil colour (मृदा रंग):- Colour is produced due to reflection of radiation of specific wavelengths. Dark coloured soils radiate less heat than bright coloured soils. The ratio between the incoming (incident energy) and outgoing (reflected energy) radiation is called albedo. The larger the albido, the cooler is the soil. Rough surfaced soil absorbs more solar radiation than smooth surface soils.
7. Soil structure, texture and moisture (मृदा संरचना, बनावट और नमी):- Compact soils have higher thermal conductivity than loose soils. Natural structures have high conductivity than disturbed soil structures. Mineral soils have higher conductivity than organic soils. Moist soil will have uniform temperature over depth because of its good conductivity than dry soils.
8. Soluble salts (घुलनशील लवण):- Indirectly affects soil temperature by influencing the biological activities, evaporation etc.

Effect of soil temperature on plant growth (पादप वृद्धि पर मृदा तापमान का प्रभाव):- There are various influences of soil temperature on soil fertility by changing the soil environment which in turn affect plant growth.
1. Germination of seeds (बीजों का अंकुरण):- The germination of the different seeds is greatly influenced by the variation in soil temperature. If the temperature is too low, the seed fails to germinate or germinate at a slow rate. On the other hand, seeds may be injured if the temperature will be very high.
2. Decomposition of organic matter in soil (मृदा में कार्बनिक पदार्थों का अपघटन):- Various important functions of organic matter depend on the process of decomposition which is largely influenced by the soil temperature. The decomposed products vary with the rate of decomposition of organic matter. At low temperature the rate of organic matter decomposition is low resulting various toxic organic substances in soil and the high temperature the rate of the same is very fast resulting beneficial products of organic matter decomposition and hence influence the plant growth.
3. Absorption of water (जल का अवशोषण):- Variation in soil temperature (very low to high temperature) affects the absorption of soil water by the plant roots. The effect of temperature in reducing the rate of water uptake may be important in spring time resulting strong transpiration.
4. Availability of nutrients (पोषक तत्वों की उपलब्धता):- Various physio-chemical and chemical reactions are greatly influenced by soil temperature. Temperature influences the solubility reactions of different nutrients and releases larger amount of nutrient elements in the soil solution at higher temperatures. The rate of nutrient uptake, however, is almost different for each crop, but it appears to be known about the relative effect of temperature on the uptake of nutrients.
5. Root growth (जड़ वृद्धि):- Soil temperature affects the type of root growth. Low temperature encourage white succulent roots with little branching, while high temperatures encourage a browner, finer and much more freely branching root system. However, the soil temperature at which roots grow fastest is usually higher than the temperature which encourages the most extensive root system.
6. Plant diseases (पादप रोग):- Development of various diseases are also related to the soil temperature. At low temperatures, the soil contain many weekly parasitic fungi which will grow actively and very rapidly and so those will kill the seedlings. On the other hands, seedlings of the temperate zone cereals, which are adapted to grow actively at the lower temperatures are relatively resistant to their attack.
