Problems of dryland agriculture
Climatic Problems (जलवायु संबंधी समस्याएँ):- Dryland agriculture is largely rain-dependent and vulnerable to erratic weather patterns. The major climatic challenges include:
i. Low and Uncertain Rainfall
> Dryland regions receive less than 750 mm of annual rainfall, which is insufficient for crop growth.
> Rainfall is erratic and unevenly distributed, leading to droughts and crop failures.
ii. Frequent Droughts (बार-बार सूखा):-
> Meteorological drought occurs when annual rainfall is significantly below normal.
> Agricultural drought happens when soil moisture is inadequate for crop growth.
> Prolonged dry spells result in low crop yields and income losses.
iii. High Evapotranspiration (उच्च वाष्पोत्सर्जन):-
> Due to high temperatures (above 40°C in summer), moisture loss from soil and plants is excessive.
Evaporation (E) (वाष्पीकरण) + Transpiration (T) (वाष्पोत्सर्जन)
Evaporation (E) (वाष्पीकरण):- Loss of water from soil surface.
Transpiration (T) (वाष्पोत्सर्जन):- Loss of water from plant surface.
> This leads to poor water retention and affects crop growth.
> Evapotranspiration (ET) / Precipitation (P) Ratio [वाष्पीवाष्पोत्सर्जन (ET) / वर्षा (P) अनुपात]:-
Rainfed Farming (वर्षा आधारित खेती):-
ET/P < 1 (precipitation meets evapotranspiration needs)
Irrigated Farming (सिंचित खेती):-
ET/P > 1 (irrigation required)
Dryland Farming (शुष्क भूमि खेती):-
ET/P > 1 (high evapotranspiration, low precipitation)
iv. Extreme Weather Events (चरम मौसम की घटनाएँ):-
> Heatwaves, hailstorms, cyclones, and unseasonal rains damage standing crops.
> Flash floods cause soil erosion and nutrient loss.

Soil-Related Problems (मिट्टी से संबंधित समस्याएँ):- Soil conditions in dryland areas pose serious challenges for farming:
i. Low Soil Fertility (कम मिट्टी की उर्वरता):-
> Dryland soils are often poor in organic matter (humus), nitrogen, and essential nutrients.
> Soil degradation leads to low productivity and the need for external inputs.
ii. Soil Erosion (मिट्टी का कटाव):-
> Wind and water erosion remove the fertile topsoil layer, making land less productive.
> Deforestation and overgrazing accelerate soil erosion.
iii. Soil Moisture Deficiency (मिट्टी में नमी की कमी):-
> Lack of rainfall and high temperatures cause rapid moisture depletion.
> Poor soil structure reduces water infiltration and retention capacity.
iv. Salinity and Alkalinity (लवणता और क्षारीयता):-
> In some dryland areas, high salt concentration affects soil fertility.
> Poor drainage and irrigation mismanagement worsen salinity problems.

Technological Problems (तकनीकी समस्याएँ):- There is a lack of adequate technology and infrastructure to support dryland farming:
i. Poor Irrigation Facilities (सिंचाई की खराब सुविधाएँ):-
> Most dryland farmers lack access to irrigation and depend entirely on monsoon rains.
> Traditional irrigation systems are inefficient, leading to water wastage.
ii. Lack of Drought-Resistant Crop Varieties
> Many farmers lack access to improved, drought-tolerant seed varieties.
> Traditional crops are not always well-suited to changing climate conditions.
iii. Limited Mechanization (सीमित मशीनीकरण):-
> Small landholdings and lack of financial resources restrict the use of modern machinery.
> Farmers rely on traditional methods, which are less efficient.
iv. Post-Harvest Losses (कटाई के बाद होने वाले नुकसान):-
> Inadequate storage and processing facilities lead to high post-harvest losses.
> Pests and rodents further damage stored grains.
v. Inefficient Water Management (अकुशल जल प्रबंधन):-
> Lack of awareness and adoption of rainwater harvesting and micro-irrigation.
> Poor watershed management practices cause water runoff and soil degradation.

Socio-Economic Problems (सामाजिक-आर्थिक समस्याएँ):- Several socio-economic factors further hinder dryland agriculture:
i. Small and Fragmented Landholdings
> Most farmers own small and scattered land parcels, reducing efficiency.
> Mechanization and investment in irrigation become economically unviable.
ii. Poor Financial Condition of Farmers
> Dryland farmers face low and uncertain incomes due to crop failures.
> Lack of credit access forces farmers to depend on informal moneylenders, leading to debt traps.
iii. Lack of Crop Insurance and Support
> Many farmers lack crop insurance, leaving them vulnerable to financial losses.
> Government support is often inadequate or not well-implemented.
iv. Market Fluctuations and Poor Price Realization
> Farmers struggle with unstable crop prices due to market volatility.
> Middlemen exploit farmers, reducing their profits.
v. Low Adoption of Sustainable Practices
> Many farmers are unaware of scientific soil and water conservation techniques.
> Traditional practices, while sustainable, are often not productive enough to meet growing demands.
