Characteristics of Agriculture (as an economic activity) [कृषि की विशेषताएं (एक आर्थिक गतिविधि के रूप में)]:- Agriculture as a sector has distinct features that differentiate it from other industries:
i. Dependence on Nature (प्रकृति पर निर्भरता):-
> Agriculture is heavily dependent on climatic conditions like rainfall, temperature, and seasons.
> Natural calamities can cause large-scale damage.
ii. Seasonality (मौसमीपन):-
> Agricultural production is seasonal; crops are sown and harvested at specific times.
> Labor and income in agriculture are not evenly distributed over the year.
iii. Geographical Immobility of Land (भूमि की भौगोलिक गतिहीनता):- Land, the primary resource in agriculture, is immobile and fixed in supply.
iv. Small-sized and Fragmented Holdings (छोटे और खंडित जोत):- In countries like India, landholdings are often small and scattered, affecting economies of scale.
v. Subsistence Orientation (निर्वाह उन्मुखीकरण):- In many developing countries, agriculture is practiced mainly for household consumption rather than for market.
vi. Diminishing Returns (घटते प्रतिफल):- The law of diminishing returns is more apparent in agriculture due to the fixed supply of land.
vii. Low Capital Intensity (कम पूंजी सघनता):-
> Traditionally, agriculture uses more labor and less capital compared to industry.
> However, modern agriculture is becoming more capital-intensive.
viii. Price and Income Instability (मूल्य और आय अस्थिरता):- Due to inelastic supply and demand, agricultural prices and farmer incomes are often unstable.
ix. Dual Role – Production & Employment (दोहरी भूमिका – उत्पादन और रोजगार):- Agriculture not only produces food but also provides livelihood to a large part of the population.
x. Biological Process (जैविक प्रक्रिया):- Agricultural production involves biological processes, making it uncertain and risky.
