Assessment of Water Requirement (WR) - components and components of water requirement - water supplied and water demand, factors influencing water requirement [जल आवश्यकता का आकलन (WR) - जल आवश्यकता के घटक और घटक - आपूर्ति किया गया जल और जल मांग, जल आवश्यकता को प्रभावित करने वाले कारक]:- Assessment of Water Requirement (WR) is a fundamental concept in irrigation and water management. It helps determine how much water a crop needs during its entire growing period for optimum growth and yield.
Water Requirement (WR) (जल आवश्यकता):- It is the total quantity of water required by a crop from the time of sowing to harvest for normal growth under field conditions. It includes:
> Water used by plants (transpiration)
> Water evaporated from soil
> Water used in metabolic activities
> Unavoidable losses
Components of Water Requirement (जल आवश्यकता के घटक):- Water requirement consists of the following major components:
i. Evapotranspiration (ET) (वाष्पी-वाष्पोत्सर्जन):- It is the largest component of WR. It is the combination of:
> Evaporation (water loss from soil surface)
> Transpiration (water loss from plant leaves)
ET = E + T
ii. Effective Rainfall (Pe) (प्रभावी वर्षा):-
> Portion of rainfall that is actually available to the crop.
> Not all rainfall is useful due to runoff and deep percolation.
iii. Soil Moisture Contribution (SM) (मृदा नमी योगदान):-
> Water stored in soil that is utilized by crops.
> Especially important in rainfed agriculture.
iv. Groundwater Contribution (Gw) (भूजल योगदान):- Water supplied through capillary rise from shallow water table.
v. Application Losses (La) (अनुप्रयोग हानि):- Water lost during irrigation due to:
> Seepage (रिसाव):- It is the slow movement of water horizontally or vertically through porous soil or rock.
> Conveyance losses (परिवहन हानि)
General Formula of Water Requirement
WR = ET + La + Other needs (अन्य आवश्यकताएँ)
More detailed form (अधिक विस्तृत रूप):-
WR = IR + Pe + Gw + SM
Where (जहाँ):
IR = Irrigation Requirement (सिंचाई आवश्यकता)
Pe = Effective rainfall (प्रभावी वर्षा)
Gw = Groundwater contribution (भूजल योगदान)
SM = Soil moisture contribution (मृदा नमी योगदान)
Water Supplied vs Water Demand (जल आपूर्ति बनाम जल मांग):-
Water Supplied (जल आपूर्ति):- Total water available to crops from all sources:
> Soil moisture (मृदा नमी)
> Groundwater (भूजल)
Formula (सूत्र):-
Water Supplied (जल आपूर्ति) = IR + Pe + Gw + SM
Water Demand (जल मांग):- Total water required by the crop:
> Mainly evapotranspiration (ET)
> Includes growth and physiological needs
> If (यदि):
i. Water Supplied = Water Demand → Optimum growth
ii. Water Supplied < Water Demand → Water stress
iii. Water Supplied > Water Demand → Waterlogging / wastage
Irrigation Requirement (IR) (सिंचाई आवश्यकता):- Amount of water that must be supplied through irrigation to meet crop needs after accounting for rainfall and other contributions.
IR = WR − (Pe + Gw + SM)
Factors Influencing Water Requirement (जल आवश्यकता को प्रभावित करने वाले कारक):-
i. Climatic Factors (जलवायु कारक):-
> Temperature → Higher temp increases ET
> Wind velocity → Increases evaporation
> Humidity → Low humidity increases water loss
> Sunshine hours → More sunlight increases ET
> Rainfall → Reduces irrigation requirement
ii. Crop Factors (फसल संबंधी कारक):-
> Crop type (फसल का प्रकार):- Sugarcane and rice are among the highest water-consuming crops (approx. 1200–2500 mm), while millets and pulses are the lowest.
