Determinants, Utility theory; law of diminishing marginal utility, Equi-marginal utility principle

Determinants, Utility theory; law of diminishing marginal utility, Equi-marginal utility principle
Utility Theory (उपयोगिता सिद्धांत):- Utility means the satisfaction or want-satisfying power of a commodity. In economics, utility is subjective (depends on person, place, time).
Types of Utility (उपयोगिता के प्रकार):-
i. Total Utility (TU) (कुल उपयोगिता):- Total satisfaction from consuming goods.
ii. Marginal Utility (MU) (सीमांत उपयोगिता):- Additional satisfaction from consuming one more unit.
Example (उदाहरण):- If a person eats rotis (chapati):
Units (Roti)     Total Utility Marginal Utility
        1                 10                     10
        2                 18                     8
        3                 24                     6
        4                 28                     4
        5                 28                     0
> MU decreases with more consumption.

Determinants of Utility (उपयोगिता के निर्धारक):-Utility depends on several factors:
i. Intensity of Want (आवश्यकता की तीव्रता):- More need → More utility
Example (उदाहरण):- Water has high utility in Rajasthan desert areas.
ii. Income of Consumer (उपभोक्ता की आय):- Higher income → Lower marginal utility of money
iii. Price of Commodity (वस्तु का मूल्य):- Lower price → More consumption → More utility
iv. Availability of Substitutes (विकल्प वस्तुओं की उपलब्धता):- More substitutes → Less utility of a specific good
v. Taste and Preferences (स्वाद और पसंद):- Changes utility across individuals. Such as Tea vs Coffee preference in India.
vi. Time and Place (समय और स्थान):- Ice cream has more utility in summer than winter
vii. Social & Cultural Factors (सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक कारक):- Festivals like Diwali increase utility of sweets

Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility (LDMU) (सीमान्त उपयोगिता हास का नियम):- It was initially formulated by Hermann Heinrich Gossen (often referred to as H.H. Gossen), a German economist, in 1854. It  is commonly known as "Gossen's First Law of Consumption". Alfred Marshall was the one who popularized and formalised it in economic theory.
> According to this law, as a consumer consumes more units of a good, marginal utility decreases. When the total utility is at its maximum, the marginal utility is zero.
> MU curve slopes downward.
> Consumption is continuous
> Units are identical
> No change in income or taste
> Rational behavior
Example (उदाहरण):- Eating mangoes in summer.
First mango → very satisfying
Fifth mango → less satisfaction
> Addictions (tea, cigarettes)
> Rare collections (stamps, coins)
> Initial stages of consumption
> Basis of demand law
> Helps in pricing policy
> Guides consumer behavior

Law of Equi-Marginal Utility
> Also called as Law of Substitution or Gossen’s Second Law.
> A consumer maximizes satisfaction when:
> Utility is maximized when MU per rupee is equal for all goods.
> A consumer spends ₹100 on:
> He adjusts spending until satisfaction per rupee is equal for both.
> Rational consumer
> Utility measurable (cardinal approach)
> Constant income
> Given prices
> Helps in optimum allocation of income
> Basis of consumer equilibrium
> Useful in budget planning in Indian families
> Applied in government resource allocation
