2022 Solved Old Paper (BOT-103)
Habitat (आवास):- It is a place or area where a species grows, lives or thrives. It is a natural environment where an animal utilizes the resources to find food to eat, shelter from heat and cold, and protection from predators and mates.
Continuous Change (सतत परिवर्तन):- Habitats might change over time either due to important environmental changes like -
i. Volcanoes (ज्वालामुखी)
ii. Tornadoes (तूफ़ान)
iii. Changes in climate over a lengthy period
v. Urbanization (शहरीकरण)
vi. Pollution (प्रदूषण)
vii. Availability of food and water
Ecesis (इकैसिस):- It is the adjustment of establishing species with the prevailing conditions. These can modify the population to adapt to several conditions of the environment. It includes several factors like aggregation, competition, migration, etc.
Nitrification (नाइट्रीकरण):- In this process the ammonia will be converted into nitrite which is framed by the oxidation of ammonia done by bacteria of Nitrosomonas species. Nitrites are then converted to nitrates which is an important conversion as the ammonia gas produced is very harmful for plants.
Niche (निच):- It is defined as a functional role played by an organism in its ecosystem. It is the effective role and position of a species in its environment that describes how the species responds to the location of resources and competitors or predators.
> Joseph Grinnel coined the term “Niche”. He described a niche as the distributional unit specific to each species.
Characreristics of niche (निच के अभिलक्षण):-
i. Interactions (अंतरक्रियाएं):- A niche may also involve what that individual eats, how it interacts with other living things, and also how it connects with the non-living factors.
ii. Energy flow (ऊर्जा प्रवाह):- Niche consumes the flow of energy from one species to another, and thus it is very important to accept how a species eats or interacts with other organisms in an ecosystem to maintain ecological balance.
iii. Balance (संतुलन):- Without ecological niches, there would be less biological variety, and the ecosystem would not be in balance. For example, a population in an environment make use of the resources and breeds to produce more animals or organisms, which then escalate the resources for the predators.
iv. Factors (कारक):- The full span of biotic and abiotic factors utilized by species for duration form the fundamental niche, and the element that limits the population, like competition and predators, are called limiting factors.
Types of Niches (निच के प्रकार):- 5 types - (5 निच -)
i. Habitat Niche (Spatial Niche) आवास निच (स्थानिक निच):- It accounts for the physical space occupied by an organism. This explains the different microhabitats owned by several species having similar general habitats. E.g. seven species of millipedes reside in the same general habitat of the forest floor of a maple oak forest, and all are decomposers, i.e. occupy the same trophic level but predominate in their specific microhabitat that is created by several gradients in the decomposition stage.
ii. Trophic Niche (पोषक निच):- It tells about the functional role or trophic position occupied by a species. It explains how different species share the same habitat but occupy different trophic niches. E.g. Darwin’s finches of the Galapagos islands. These birds belong to the same genera and live in the same general habitat but differ in their eating habits, i.e. trophic position. One species is vegetarian, feeding on buds and fruits, and, others are insect eaters, feeding on insects of different sizes. There is a woodpecker finch, which has a wood-pecking beak.
iii. Hypervolume Niche (Multidimensional Niche) हाइपरवॉल्यूम निच (बहुआयामी निच):- It represents the position of a species in the environmental gradient. There are a large number of environmental factors, both abiotic and biotic, that affect the population. This is the fundamental niche of the species and refers to the totality of abiotic and biotic factors to which a given species is uniquely adapted.
iv. Fundamental Niche (आधारभूत निच):- It is recognized by Hutchinson. The fundamental niche of a species is the hypervolume that a population can fill in the absence of competitors. So each species has a fundamental niche within a community.
v. Realized Niche (वास्तविक निच):- It is also recognized by Hutchinson. Because of competition, due to similar essentials along the niche dimension, the competitor niches will be overlying one another. As a result of these biotic constraints, only a part of the niche is realized by the species. These smaller hyper volumes occupied by a species are termed the realized niche.
Relationship Between Habitat and Niche
> Habitats can exist without niches. Habitat is the sum of all conditions for an animal to live in (potential habitat).
> A habitat is only engaged (realized habitat) when an ecosystem grows, and niches are integrated into it. This is called habitat differentiation and is deeply interconnected with the presence of a thriving ecosystem.
> It is possible that two animals can have the same niche (same role) in an ecosystem, provided they live in various habitats. For example, deer and rabbits both play the role of herbivores (an animal that feeds only on plants), but you find deer in the woody areas of a forest while rabbits are found in the open areas.
Difference between Habitat and Niche
What Would Happen if Organisms Evolved into the Same Niche and the Same Habitat?
> When two animals occupy the same niche in the same habitat, they begin to contest.
> If deer were brought into an open area, both deer and rabbits would begin to fight for the same system.
> Eventually, one would get rid of the other (survival of the fittest) or develop a new niche within a niche.
> Hence, niches play a major role in keeping the diversity alive in a species.
> Niches ensure organisms have definite roles and the roles do not overlap to escape competition and elimination.

Food Chain (खाध्य शृंखला):- Flow of energy in an ecosystem is one way process. The sequence of organism through which the energy flows, is known as food chain.
> Food chains were first introduced by the Arab scientist and philosopher Al-Jahiz in the 10th century and later popularized in a book published in 1927 by Charles Elton, which also introduced the food web concept.
> Each food chain is made up of different trophic levels.
> Each organism represents a trophic level.
> Each organism obtains energy from the organism of its lower trophic level.
> Plants are called producers because they create their own food through photosynthesis.
> Animals are consumers because they cannot create their own food, they must eat plants or other animals to get the energy that they need.
Trophic levels in a food chain (खाद्य श्रृंखला में पोषक स्तर):- Each food chain is made up of different trophic levels. Each organism represents a trophic level. They are represented as T1, T2, T3 etc.
a. Producers (उत्पादक) (T1)
b. Consumers (उपभोक्ता):-
i. Primary consumers (प्राथमिक उपभोक्ता) (T2)
ii. Secondary consumers (द्वितीयक उपभोक्ता) (T3)
iii. Tertiary consumers (तृतीयक उपभोक्ता) (T4)
iv. Quaternary consumers (चतुर्थक उपभोक्ता) (T5)
c. Decomposers (अपघटक)
Types of Food Chain
Causes of Plant succession
i. Initial or initiating causes (प्रारंभिक या शुरुआती कारण):- These causes include both biotic and climatic. It has factors like erosion, wind, fire, natural disasters, etc. These causes heavily affect the population of that locality.
ii. Ecesis causes (इकैसिस कारण):- These causes are also known as continuing causes. These can modify the population to adapt to several conditions of the environment. It includes several factors like aggregation, competition, migration, etc.
iii. Stabilizing causes (स्थायीकरण कारण):- These causes bring stability to the communities. It has several factors like the nature of the climatic condition of the area, fertility of land and abundance of availability of minerals, etc.
Phosphorus cycle (फॉस्फोरस चक्र):-
> Phosphorus mainly passes through the hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere.
> It is essential for both animal and plant growth.
> However, it gradually depletes in soil.
> In comparison to the carbon cycle, the phosphorus cycle does not pass through the atmosphere.
> Phosphorus cycle is said to be a very slow process.
i.Weathering (अपक्षय):- The phosphate salts are mostly found in rocks and are hence broken down and washed away from the rocks into the ground. Hence it is seen that the process starts from the earth’s crust.
ii. Absorption by Plants (पौधों द्वारा अवशोषण):- The phosphate salts once dissolved in soil will be absorbed by the plans however the amount taken is very less. Hence some phosphate fertilizers are added by farmers for the plants to take in. However as phosphates do not properly dissolve in water they are not absorbed by the life in aquatic ecosystems.
iii. Absorption by Animals (जंतुओं द्वारा अवशोषण):- The animals absorb most of the phosphorus content by consumption of other animals and plants. The rate of phosphorus cycle is faster in most animals compared to as seen in rocks.
iv. Phosphorus being returned to the ecosystem (फॉस्फोरस को पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र में लौटाया जा रहा है):- The plants and animals then tend to die and hence pass on the phosphorus from their body back to the ecosystem which is converted into the inorganic form and recycled to rocks and soil. This step is further again seen by weathering and hence the cycle goes again on.
Effect of Air Pollution on Plants:-
1. Damaging the plants:- Air pollution means the introduction of harmful chemicals into the air, like sulfur, nitrogen oxides and carbons. These chemicals cause damage to plants, with the plants physically showing the damage in a variety of ways, for instance through stunted growth, necrotic lesions, and changes in colors. Change in color could be represented by chlorosis which is when plant leaves turn yellow, reddening, mottling or bronzing.
2. Obstructing a plant’s growth:- Ozone is harmful to the atmosphere as it leads to holes in the upper atmosphere. In doing so, ultraviolet light is able to pass through the atmosphere, causing further damage to plants. Destruction by the ozone in the lower atmosphere restricts respiration, obstructs stomata, prevents photosynthesis and stunts plant growth.
3. Reduced yields and damage to crops:- Plants absorb pollutants from the air, making the air cleaner. With a build-up of too many pollutants, plants may fail to grow as they should, including being unable to perform photosynthesis. This, in turn, will mean plants will fail to have fewer yields than they should. Reduced yields especially in agricultural crops will mean hunger for the people and animals, and will also drive prices of such commodities up, destabilizing the economy.
4. Contributing to global warming:- With air pollution affecting plants and their leaves, it means they will be unable to absorb carbon dioxide as they should. This means more carbon dioxide will escape into the atmosphere, which will further damage the ozone layer, and cause a build-up of more greenhouse gases. This will also contribute to global warming and subsequently climate change.
Effect of Water Pollution on Plants:-
1. Denying plants essential nutrients:- Plants require specific nutrients, which they get from the soil, water and air. Polluted waters might kill some of those nutrients, further denying the plant the ability to get them.
2. Poisoning the soils:- Water pollution will introduce toxins that are harmful to plants. An accumulation of such toxins in the water will poison the soils even for other crops or plants. This will in turn negatively affect the solubility of essential nutrients and ions, like magnesium, calcium and potassium, which are particularly vital for proper plant growth. Water pollution also introduces large amounts of aluminum to the soil, which harms plants.
3. Facilitating the growth of rival plants:- Water pollution gives rise and ample room for other plants to grow. These new plants may not be native to a region and could be detrimental to the existing plants. These weeds will grow well because the nutrients they require for survival are collected in the polluted water.
4. Killing and harming plants:- Water pollution changes the growing conditions of plants, including eroding necessary nutrients and bringing in new and hazardous ones. This means the normal growth of plants will be affected and the plants themselves will be harmed. If the condition is persistent, the plants will eventually die. Water pollution can also alter a plant’s surrounding pH levels, such as acid rain, which also harms and kills plants.
Effect of Soil Pollution on Plants:-
1. Poisoning the soils:- Toxins will enter the soil and poison it, causing a chain reaction. The result will be an alteration in the soil’s biodiversity, reduction in the soil’s organic matter, as well as its capacity to act as a filter. With regards to plants, the soil becomes weak and is not able to sustain plants as compared to previous years. This explains why most farms which rely on fertilizers, have been giving out lower yields year after year. Soil pollution increases the salinity of the soil making it unfit for vegetation, thus making it useless and barren.
2. Poisoning the plants:- As mentioned underwater pollution, toxins poison the soil and in turn, poison the plants themselves. Land pollution through oil spills, pesticides, landfills, illegal dumping and many other sources results in chemicals seeping into the soil and eventually into the plants. These chemicals and metals damage plant cells and hinder them from obtaining the necessary nutrients for growing. This explains why soil pollution also leads to lower yields and poor quality harvests.
3. The effects reach our food chain:- Soil pollution, affects plants, meaning they will absorb the pollutants. If we feed on such plants or crops, like vegetables, we inadvertently end up poisoning ourselves. It also means we do the same by consuming animal products like meat and milk if the animals themselves fed on these compromised plants.
4. Affecting waterways:- When the soil is contaminated, water that is stored in the soil and below it is also affected, causing a lot more issues. This water is used by millions directly and indirectly. The indirect part is that other people will grow crops using the same contaminated water, spreading the problem to more people who may be many miles away.
Sources of water pollution (जल प्रदूषण के कारण):- Water pollution in India according to Gbamanija (1998) arises from various activities, among which are:
> Sewage leakages (वाहित माल रिसाव)
> High population density (उच्च आवादी घनत्व)
> Oil spillage (तेल छलकन)
> Industrial waste dumped into our waters.
> Pollution of ground water through drilling activities.
> Flooding during rainy season which carries waste deposits into our waters.
> Building lavatories and visionaries over running water or even the sea as it the practice in some riverine areas.
> Vehicle pollution (वाहन प्रदूषण)
> Combustion (दहन)
> Toxic waste disposal at sea
> Mineral processing plant (खनिज संसाधन संयंत्र)
> Eroded sediments (अपरदित तलछटें)
> Deforestation (वनोन्मूलन)
> Mining (खनन)
> Pesticides (कीटनाशी)
> Herbicides and fertilizers (शाकनाशी व उर्वरक)
> Failing septic system (सेप्टिक प्रणाली का विफल होना)
> House hold chemicals (घरेलू रसायन)
> Animal wastes (जन्तु अपशिष्ट)
Environmental impact assessment (EIA):- It is a process through which an environmental impact of a proposed development is evaluated.
Introduction:-
> While undertaking Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), the inter-related socio-economic, cultural, and human-health impacts are considered.
> It is a tool used to assess the positive and negative environmental, economic, and social impacts of a project.
> This is used to predict the environmental impacts of a project in the pre-planning stage itself so that decisions can be taken to reduce the adverse impacts.
Evolution & History:-
> The birth of EIA is dated back to the 1970s. In 1969, The USA had brought its first National Environment Policy Act (NEPA) 1969.
> The EIA was initially practised by developed nations but slowly it was also introduced in developing nations including India.
> Columbia and the Philippines are the earliest examples of developing nations who introduced EIA in their policies. Columbia brought it in 1974 while the Philippines in 1978.
> Worldwide, EIA is now practised in more than 100 countries. By the mid-1990s, some 110 countries applied EIA as a major environmental policy.
> In 1989, EIA was adopted as the major development project by the World Bank.
Objectives:-
i. Identifying, predicting, and evaluating economic, environmental, and social impacts of development activities.
ii. Providing information on the environmental consequences for decision making.
iii. Promoting environmentally sound and suitable development by identifying appropriate alternatives and mitigation measures.
Process:-
i. Screening:- Which projects need a full or partial assessment study is decided in this stage.
ii. Scoping:-
- Which impacts are necessary to be assessed is decided in this stage. While doing so, legal requirements, international conventions, expert knowledge, and public engagement are also considered.
- Alternative solutions that avoid or at least reduce the adverse impacts of the project are also studied in this stage.
- Investigation of alternate designs or sites that avoid or mitigate impact takes place.
iii. Assessment & Evaluation of Impacts and Development of Alternatives:- Environmental impacts of the proposed project are analyzed and light is thrown upon the alternatives present to such projects.
iv. EIA Report also called Environmental Impact Statement (EIS):- An environmental management plan (EMP) and also a non-technical summary of the project’s impact is prepared for the general public in this stage.
v. Decision Making:- The fate of the project is decided. Whether the project is to be given approval or not and if it is to be given, under what conditions.
vi. Monitoring, compliance, enforcement and environmental auditing:- Monitoring whether the predicted impacts and the mitigation efforts happen as per the EMP.
Importance:-
i. EIA is a good tool for prudent environment management.
ii. It is government-policy that any industrial project in India has to secure EIA clearance from the Environment Ministry before approval for the project itself.
Environmental Impact Assessment In India:-
> EIA started in India in 1976-77 when the Planning Commission directed the Department of Science & Technology to assess the river valley projects from the point of view of the environment. This was extended for all those projects that required approval from the Public Investment Board.
> Then, in 1986, the government enacted the Environment (Protection) Act which made EIA statutory. The other main laws in this regard are the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act (1972), the Water Act (1974), the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act (1981), and the Biological Diversity Act (2002).
> In 1982, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change set up the Environmental Information System (ENVIS) to collect, collate, storing, retrieving and disseminating information related to the environment sector. This serves as a web-based distributed network of subject-specific databases. The chief purpose of the ENVIS is to integrate all countrywide efforts to collect, store, disseminate, and use environment-information for better managing environmental assessment activities.
Ecosystem (पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र):- It is a structural and functional unit of ecology where the living organisms interact with each other and the surrounding environment.
> The term “Ecosystem” was first coined by A.G.Tansley, an English botanist, in 1935.

1. Abiotic Components (अजैविक घटक):- These are the non-living component of an ecosystem.
a. Climatic factors (जलवायु कारक):-
i. Rain (वर्षा):- It is a crucial factor in determining the climate of a given location. Once again rain is heavily influenced by the Sun as it drives evaporation from the Earth’s ocean which is then dumped as rain. Rain can also be regulated through the release of water from plants.
ii. Light (प्रकाश):- Sunlight is one of the most important abiotic factors and is the primary source of energy. Plants require it for photosynthesis.

> Tortula, Grimmia Byrum and Barbula etc. begin to invade the environment that had so far been dominated by lichens. Later on, mosses like Funaria, Sphagnum and Polytrichum make their appearance.
> These mosses grow, compete with the lichens and more organic matter to the soil after death and decay.
> The accumulated thick layer of soil retains a greater amount of water. It provides suitable habitat for the invasion of herbs, grasses, and ferns.
4. Herb stage (शाक चरण):-
> In this stage, certain animals, such as nematodes, insects, etc., also invade the area.
> The weathering of rocks by physical, chemical, and biological means provides more soil and nutrients.
> Various bacteria and fungi decompose the accumulated organic matter.
> At this stage, certain larger herbs and grasses enter the community.
> Eg. (उदाहरण):- Andropogon commonly known as broom sedge.
5. Shrub stage (झाड़ी चरण):-
> On the soil, thus prepared by lichens, mosses, and herbs, shrubs find favorable conditions for their growth.
> Eg. (उदाहरण):- Perennial wood plants such as Acacia, Prosopis, Capparis, Zizyphus etc.
> The shrub over shed the herbaceous vegetation and produces more organic matter.
6. Climax stage (चरमोत्कर्ष चरण):-
> No more change of natural condition is required here.
> Vegetation will depend on the temperature, climate, humidity, etc.
> In moistened wet climate, dense forest is developed as a climax community.
B. Psammosere (सेमोसीयर):- Succession which occurs on sand dunes.
> The sand deposits are unstable and liable to shift by water or air.
> Another essential feature of the sand mass is its dryness and lack of nutrients, on which succession follows an interesting sequence.
1. Sand binding stage (रेत बाँधने का चरण):-
> It is the binding sand particles on the surface level.
> The shifting of sand particles is reduced.
> Small algal growth during the rainy season provides enough organic matter, which closes the spaces between large sand particles and binds the particle together.
> Grasses like Sacchareen, Ammophila etc., also help in binding the sand.
> Their extensively developed fibrous roots and rhizomes growing near the surface become so entangled that the sand below them is not easily affected by wind or water.
> These grasses also add organic matter, which helps retain moisture and nutrient.
> If terraces of moisture are available, then lichens and filamentous algae start to grow on the surface of the sand. Then there is no possibility of removing sand from that place.
2. Sand stabilization (रेत स्थायीकरण):-
> After binding sand, the dunes start establishing, and more deep-rooted woody plants grow on it.
> Leptadenia, Trephrosia, Balanitis, Citrullus, Sericostomata, etc., have a deep root system that enables them to draw their water requirement from the deeper soil layer.
> These plants have profuse branch shoots, which protect the sand from erosion.
> Inter mixture with them are plants like Zizyphus, Salvadora, Calotropis, and several types of grass whose root system is not deep but very much branched and thus help in stronger binding in the sand.
> Therefore, these plant's sand dune becomes gradually enriched in nutrients and organic matter and retains enough moisture.
> Due to action and reaction with the environment and relative plants, a stable situation is achieved.
3. Climax stage (चरमोत्कर्ष चरण):-
> At this stage, the dune is fixed, perennial trees with a relatively deep root system become established, and the dune becomes stable.
> Species of Acacia, Proscopis, Albizia, Casuarina, etc., are common on stable dunes in dry climates.
> Species of other trees and tall grasses like Citrinus, Pharmites, Ananda, etc., are noticed along the river bank.
> The vegetation gets shaped in this stage and ultimately becomes established.
Air pollution (वायु प्रदूषण):- Any change in the physical, chemical or biological properties of air that will have a detrimental consequence of any living organism. It is the release of pollutants such as gases, particles, biological molecules, etc. into the air that is harmful to human health and the environment.

Sources of Air Pollution
i. Traffic & Mobility (यातायात एवं मोबिलिटी):-
> Petrol and diesel engines of cars, ships, trains and other vehicles emit pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
> Friction from tires and brake wear also create primary – i.e. direct – particulate matter emissions.
> In addition, the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and VOCs released by road vehicles also undergo photochemical reactions to form ozone (O3).
> In Europe, more than 40% of NOx and almost 40% of primary PM2.5 emissions are linked to road transport. In the United States, 35.8% of CO and 32.8% of NOx stem from road transport.
ii. Industry & Heating (उद्योग एवं तापन):-
> The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and oil in industrial processes in power plants, refineries, and factories release a variety of pollutants, the majority of which are identical to those emitted by traffic and mobility.
> On top of this, chemical processes and volatile industry byproducts also cause VOC emissions.
> In Europe, around 60% of sulfur oxides come from energy production and distribution.
> In the US, stationary fuel combustion sources like electric utilities and industrial boilers are responsible for 73.2% of sulfur dioxide pollution.
iii. Agriculture (कृषि):-
> A wide range of nitrogen compounds (NO, NO2, N2), including ammonia (NH3), can be attributed to fertilizer production, farm machinery, and livestock waste management in agriculture.
> In addition, methane (CH4) is released by the digestive processes of livestock.
> In Europe, agricultural activities cause approximately 90% of ammonia emissions and 80% of methane emissions.
> In the US, livestock and manure management are responsible for 46% of methane emissions.
iv. Other Sources (अन्य स्त्रोत):-
> Not all air pollution comes from human activity: Sand and dust storms from deserts like the Sahara, the Gobi, and the Taklamakan are responsible for PM2.5 pollution due to the size of the grains spread.
> Wildfires generate high levels of PM pollution along with CO and NOx. Volcanoes release NH3 and SO2 during eruptions, which can form secondary PM when combined with other pollutants in the atmosphere.
> Salt from sea spray also constitutes as PM pollution, contributing up to 80% of particle levels in coastal areas.
> Even plants are a source of VOC emissions, because they use the pollutant to adapt to environmental stress, communicate to other plants, and to defend against insects.
Causes of Air Pollution
i. Burning of Fossil Fuels (जीवाश्म ईंधन का जलना):- The combustion of fossil fuels emits a large amount of sulphur dioxide. Carbon monoxide released by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels also results in air pollution.
ii. Automobiles (मोटरवाहन):- The gases emitted from vehicles such as jeeps, trucks, cars, buses, etc. pollute the environment. These are the major sources of greenhouse gases and also result in diseases among individuals.
iii. Agricultural Activities (कृषि संबन्धित क्रियाएँ):- Ammonia is one of the most hazardous gases emitted during agricultural activities. The insecticides, pesticides and fertilizers emit harmful chemicals in the atmosphere and contaminate it.
iv. Factories and Industries (कारखाने और उद्योग):- Factories and industries are the main source of carbon monoxide, organic compounds, hydrocarbons and chemicals. These are released into the air, degrading its quality.
v. Mining Activities (खनन गतिविधियाँ):- In the mining process, the minerals below the earth are extracted using large pieces of equipment. The dust and chemicals released during the process not only pollute the air, but also deteriorate the health of the workers and people living in the nearby areas.
vi. Domestic Sources (घरेलू स्रोत):- The household cleaning products and paints contain toxic chemicals that are released in the air. The smell from the newly painted walls is the smell of the chemicals present in the paints. It not only pollutes the air but also affects breathing.
Consequences of Air Pollution (वायु प्रदूषण के परिणाम):- The hazardous effects of air pollution on the environment include:
i. Diseases (रोग):- Air pollution has resulted in several respiratory disorders and heart diseases among humans. The cases of lung cancer have increased in the last few decades. Children living near polluted areas are more prone to pneumonia and asthma. Many people die every year due to the direct or indirect effects of air pollution.
ii. Global Warming (ग्लोबल वार्मिंग):- Due to the emission of greenhouse gases, there is an imbalance in the gaseous composition of the air. This has led to an increase in the temperature of the earth. This increase in earth’s temperature is known as global warming. This has resulted in the melting of glaciers and an increase in sea levels. Many areas are submerged underwater.
iii. Acid Rain (अम्ल वर्षा):- The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides in the air. The water droplets combine with these pollutants, become acidic and fall as acid rain which damages human, animal and plant life.
iv. Ozone Layer Depletion (ओजोन परत रिक्तीकरण):- The release of chlorofluorocarbons, halons, and hydrochlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere is the major cause of depletion of the ozone layer. The depleting ozone layer does not prevent the harmful ultraviolet rays coming from the sun and causes skin diseases and eye problems among individuals.
v. Effect on Animals (जंतुओं पर प्रभाव):- The air pollutants suspend in the water bodies and affect aquatic life. Pollution also compels the animals to leave their habitat and shift to a new place. This renders them stray and has also led to the extinction of a large number of animal species.
Control of Air Pollution
i. Avoid Using Vehicles (वाहन के प्रयोग से बचें):- People should avoid using vehicles for shorter distances. Rather, they should prefer public modes of transport to travel from one place to another. This not only prevents pollution, but also conserves energy.
ii. Energy Conservation (उर्जा संरक्षण):- A large number of fossil fuels are burnt to generate electricity. Therefore, do not forget to switch off the electrical appliances when not in use. Thus, you can save the environment at the individual level. Use of energy-efficient devices such as CFLs also controls pollution to a greater level.
iii. Use of Clean Energy Resources (स्वच्छ ऊर्जा संसाधनों का उपयोग):- The use of solar, wind and geothermal energies reduce air pollution at a larger level. Various countries, including India, have implemented the use of these resources as a step towards a cleaner environment.
iv. Other efforts (अन्य प्रयास):-
- By minimizing and reducing the use of fire and fire products.
- Since industrial emissions are one of the major causes of air pollution, the pollutants can be controlled or treated at the source itself to reduce its effects. For example, if the reactions of a certain raw material yield a pollutant, then the raw materials can be substituted with other less polluting materials.
- Fuel substitution is another way of controlling air pollution. In many parts of India, petrol and diesel are being replaced by CNG – Compressed Natural Gas fueled vehicles. These are mostly adopted by vehicles that aren’t fully operating with ideal emission engines.
- Although there are many practices in India, which focus on repairing the quality of air, most of them are either forgotten or not being enforced properly. There are still a lot of vehicles on roads which haven’t been tested for vehicle emissions.
- Another way of controlling air pollution caused by industries is to modify and maintain existing pieces of equipment so that the emission of pollutants is minimized.
- Sometimes controlling pollutants at the source is not possible. In that case, we can have process control equipment to control the pollution.
- A very effective way of controlling air pollution is by diluting the air pollutants.
- The last and the best way of reducing the ill effects of air pollution is tree plantation. Plants and trees reduce a large number of pollutants in the air. Ideally, planting trees in areas of high pollution levels will be extremely effective.
Resources:- All the materials present in our environment which are used by living beings. These are very useful raw materials found in the environment.
Natural Resources:- Humans require many useful things available in nature to live on this planet. These are referred to as natural resources.
Types of Natural Resources:- The most general category is the amount of resources available for human consumption. They are two types:
1. Renewable resources
2. Non-renewable resources
1. Renewable resources:- Those resources that cannot be depleted. They are always available and thus could be reused. They can be replenished or renewed naturally over time.
i. Solar energy:- Sun is a big source of energy. The energy that we get from the Sun is called solar energy. All the natural phenomenon like the flowing of wind, water cycle, photosynthesis etc are possible only due to solar energy. Now a day, solar energy is being used to cook food with the help of solar cookers, heat water, light streets, pump water for irrigating fields etc.
ii. Hydro-Energy:- Water is important natural resources. All living organisms need water to live. Humans need water for many purposes such as drinking, cleaning, cooking and for growing crops. Water flowing into the river or water stored in a dam is sources of hydro energy. The Simple method to use hydro energy is to convert it into electrical energy.
iii. Wind energy:- Winds are constantly being created in nature. The windmill is a source of electrical energy. These windmills are generally established only at places where most of the days in a year experience strong winds. The energy from this wind is used for grinding grain, pumping water and to produce electricity. In India, many windmills have been set up in different places such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal and Gujarat.
iv. Biogas:- Biogas is a type of fuel which is a mixture of gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen etc which is obtained by decomposition of animal and plant wastes like animal dung, with the help of micro-organisms in the presence of water. It is used as fuel in gas stove especially in rural areas.
v. Wood:- Wood is an ancient and traditional source of energy. It is mainly a mixture of many carbohydrate compounds. Wood is used to cook food. It leads to deforestation and pollutes air also. In India, still in many villages, they use wood chullas to cook food every day. While having ill effects on the environment, it is also harmful to human health.
vi. Hydrogen:- It is a good source of energy because it does not create pollution and produce maximum energy on burning. Hydrogen has the potential to be the answer to all our energy and fuel troubles. Technology is currently being developed to fully utilize hydrogen efficiency.
vii. Alcohol:- Alcohol has many commercial and medical purposes. It can use for producing energy. It can be obtained while making sugar from sugarcane. Thus it is a very cheap source of energy. A mixture of petrol and alcohol is being used as a fuel in automobiles. This mixture is called ‘Gasohol’.
viii. Air:- All living things need air to breathe. Therefore, air is an important natural resource.
ix. Water:- All living things water in order to survive. And the water cycle means we will essentially never run out of the water. But we must be careful not to pollute water and make it unusable. Drinking and clean water are already scarce in the world.
x. Soil:- It is an important resource as this is the layer where plants grow. We all need food in order to survive. We get most of our food from crops grown in the soil.
2. Non-renewable resources:- Those natural resources that are available in limited quantity. These resources cannot be renewed or replenished in short duration. Therefore they are also known as exhaustible resources.
a. Fossil fuel:- Fossil fuels like coal and petroleum are non-renewable resources. They are found deep inside the earth and are made by natural processes over many centuries. Their quantity is limited and they take thousands of years to get renewed. Example of fossil fuels is coal, petroleum, natural gas etc.
i. Coal:- It is also known as black diamond. Coal is used as a fuel, to generate electricity, and in factories and steam engines.
ii. Natural gas:- Natural gas is used as a fuel called Compressed Natural Gas or CNG. Some wells dug into the earth produce only natural gas. Natural gases are a good alternative to petrol and diesel and it is used as Compressed Natural Gas. It burns easily and produces a lot of heat. It is a good source of hydrogen.
iii. Petroleum:- Petroleum is also known as mineral oil or crude oil. This liquid mineral is refined to make fuels such as petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene. Plastic, cosmetics, and lubricants are also products of petroleum. It is found deep inside the Earth or under the sea floor. It is taken out by drilling wells deep into the Earth or under the seabed.
b. Nuclear energy:- In the classification of resources, nuclear energy is classified as non-renewable. The fuel used for nuclear energy is generally uranium, which is in a limited supply. So we classify it as non-renewable. Production of electricity from nuclear energy does not release carbon dioxide. Thus, use of nuclear energy is safe for the environment.
Wildlife resources:- Wildlife comprises animals, birds, and insects living in forests. With large regional variations in physiographic, climate, and edaphic types, Indian forests offer a wide range of habitat types that are responsible for a large variety of wildlife in India. India boasts of more than 80,000 species of animals which is about 6.5% of the world’s total species. Indian fauna includes about 6,500 invertebrates, 5,000 molluscs, 2,546 species of fishes, 2,000 species of birds, and 458 species of reptiles, 4 species of panthers, and over 60,000 species of insects.
> The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has classified plants and animals in order of existence:-
i. Normal Species:- This includes species whose population levels are considered to be normal for their survival, such as cattle, sal, pine, rodents, etc. They are thus, called the normal species.
ii. Endangered Species:- This includes species which are in danger of extinction, hence called the endangered species. For example, black buck, crocodile, Indian wild ass etc.
iii. Vulnerable Species:- This includes species whose population has declined to levels from where it is likely to move into the endangered category in the near future. For examples, blue sheep, Asiatic elephant, Gangetic dolphin, etc.
iv. Rare Species:- This includes species with a small population. They might move into the endangered or vulnerable category if right measures aren’t taken. For example, Himalayan brown bear, wild Asiatic buffalo, desert fox, and hornbill, etc.
v. Endemic Species:- This includes species which are only found in some particular areas that are usually isolated by natural or geographical barriers. For example, Andaman Teal, Nicobar pigeon, Andaman wild pig, Mithun in Arunachal Pradesh.
vi. Extinct Species:- Furthermore, there are some extinct species. This includes species which are not found after searches of known or likely areas where they may occur. For example, the Asiatic cheetah, pink head duck etc.
> The elephant is the largest Indian mammal which only a few centuries ago, was found in large numbers in vast forest tracts of India. There are about 6,000 elephants in the forests of Assam and West Bengal, about 2,000 in Central India, and nearly 6,000 in three southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
> The one-horned rhinoceros, India’s second-largest mammal was once found throughout the Indo-Gangetic Plain as far west as Rajasthan, The number of this mammal has drastically deceased and now there are less than 1,500 rhinoceroses in India, confined to the restricted locations in Assam, West Bengal and UP. They survive under strict protection in the Kaziranga and Manas sanctuaries of Assam and the Jaldapara sanctuary of West Bengal.
> The Arna or wild buffalo is found in Assam and in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.
> The gaur or the Indian bison is one of the largest existing bovine and is found in the forests of Central India.
> The fourth cycle of the Tiger Census 2018 counted 2976 tigers which is 75% of the global tiger population. Tigers in India mainly found in the forests of eastern Himalayan foothills and in parts of peninsular India. The number of Cheetahs had fallen to less than one hundred until a successful breeding program in the Gir sanctuary in Gujarat resulted in some recovery. The arboreal clouded leopard is found in northern Assam while the Black Panther is a widely distributed predator.
> Asiatic lions living in Gujarat’s Gir forests, with their population going up from 523 in 2015 to 674 in 2020.
> Brown, Black, and Sloth Bear are found at high altitudes in the north-western and central Himalayas.
> Yak, the ox of snow, is largely found in Ladakh and is tamed to be used as a draught animal.
> Stag or Barasingha is found in Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
> Besides these, several species of monkeys and langur are found in almost all the forest areas of India.
> The Chinkara or the Indian gazelle, the blackbuck or the Indian antelope, the nilgai or the blue bull, the mouse deer or the Indian chevrotain, the chawstaga or the four-horned antelope, wild dog, the fox, the jackal, and the hyena, are the other mammals found in the Indian forests.
> India also abounds in the number of reptiles, although many of them are now endangered species. There are more than 200 species or subspecies of snakes, the best known being the Cobra, Krait, and Russel’s Viper. These are poisonous snakes while Dhaman is a non-poisonous large snake.
> The Blunt Nosed or Marsh Crocodile (the Magar or Mugger) and the long-nosed Gharial are important large-sized reptiles, although their number has drastically reduced. The Big Estuarine Crocodile is still found from the Ganga to the Mahanadi.
> India is extremely rich in birdlife. There are about 2,000 species of birds in India which is about three times the number of species found in Europe.
> Some birds such as ducks, cranes, swallows, and flycatchers migrate from central Asia to the wetlands of Bharatpur(Keoladeo National Park) every winter. Recently, some migratory birds have been seen near Mathura.
> Indian bird-life has all the varieties of birds which includes:
i. Aquatic birds:- They include a large variety of storks, herons, ducks, flamingoes, egrets, and cormorants.
ii. Ground birds (Gallinaceous birds):- The Great Indian Bustard, peafowl, jungle fowl, quail, and partridge are the main ground birds.
iii. Arboreal birds (tree-dwelling):- mynas, pigeons, parakeets, doves, cuckoos, rollers, beaters, etc. are other important birds.
